52% Of Guys Suffer From Erectile Dysfunction

A happy couple in the bedroom

All the stigma-busting ED facts, stats & figures...

Do you suffer from erectile dysfunction?

If so, you’re not alone! In fact, a whopping 52% of men worldwide suffer from ED(1).

Surprised? That’s not surprising. With the way we talk about erectile dysfunction - or don’t, as the case may be! - you’d think it was rare. Even if you don’t suffer from it, chances are a friend or family member does.

Most men will have erectile dysfunction at some point in their lives. That’s a fact! It’s not the only fact, either. We've compiled all the stats, facts, and figures on erectile dysfunction to show you that there’s nothing to be embarrassed about...

What causes ED & why do so many men suffer from it?

Erectile dysfunction affects about 52% of men around the world(2). That's over half of all men!

Learning how it happens is a great way to understand why so many men suffer from the condition.

Firstly, it's not a disease. It's a symptom of another problem, be it medical, psychological, or a mix of the two. While it's comforting to know you're not alone, ED can harm your self-esteem in and out of the bedroom.

Here’s just a few of the contributing factors:

Medication

  • Blood pressure medication
  • Antidepressant medication

Hormonal changes

  • Testosterone depletion

Medical conditions

  • Diabetes
  • High cholesterol
  • Hypertension
  • Obesity
  • Arthritis.

Psychological disorders

  • Low self-esteem
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Stress

Lifestyle choices

  • High alcohol intake
  • Smoking
  • Lack of exercise
  • Lack of sleep
  • Poor diet

It's easy to see why so many men have ED and why the numbers increase every year(3).

Does every man get ED?

Given the many reasons that erectile dysfunction can occur, all men are susceptible. Although we know that the likelihood of suffering from ED increases with age, it also affects a large proportion of younger men between the ages of 20 and 40.

If you’re starting to notice the signs of erectile dysfunction, here's what you need to remember:

  • It doesn't mean you're no longer attracted to your partner.
  • There are many natural and medicinal ways to treat ED.
  • There's a high chance your male friends have had - or have - erectile issues.
  • ED is not something you ‘just have to live with’, and you shouldn't feel ashamed to seek help.

Erectile dysfunction statistics from around the world

Erectile dysfunction doesn’t discriminate. Whether you’re here at home, across the ditch, or anywhere else in the world for that matter, the following facts, stats, and figures highlight just how prevalent erectile dysfunction is in men around the globe.

New Zealand

About 42% of New Zealand men(4) between the ages of 40 and 70 suffer from ED. That's more than one in three Kiwi men! Men in their 60s are hit the hardest, with over 60% affected.

Australia

Over half of Australian men(5) (52%) between the ages of 40 and 70 have been affected by ED to some degree. Like New Zealand men, over 60% of Australian men in their 60s have erectile dysfunction.

United Kingdom

The UK studied men in an age range of 18-60. The results? 43% of UK men have erectile dysfunction(6). This age range is significantly younger than New Zealand's and Australia's studies, yet the prevalence is still very high. The same study reveals that 50% of UK men have some degree of sexual dysfunction.

USA

The USA takes the lead in the western world, with 59% of men struggling with erectile dysfunction(7). However, age isn't as much of a factor in the USA as it is in other western countries. ED affects 56% of ages 18-34 and 63% of men over 55.

China

The prevalence of erectile dysfunction in China was as high as 75% a decade ago. However, recent studies show that this rate has decreased significantly, now affecting 40% of Chinese men(8) (particularly those in higher age brackets).

Erectile dysfunction statistics by age

As you age, your chances of developing erectile issues increases. This is caused by several factors such as natural testosterone depletion. However, it's a common misconception that erectile dysfunction doesn't affect younger men.

While it's true that age comes into play statistically, many younger men suffer from some degree of ED. In men under the age of 40, erectile dysfunction can mainly be attributed to lifestyle conditions such as diet, stress, and alcohol intake, making it easier to resolve the problem naturally.

New Zealand statistics show that erectile dysfunction affects(4):

  • 24% of men in their 40s
  • 38% of men in their 50s
  • 60% of men 60 and over
